Winegar said their suspect was traveling from Oregon to Idaho when his family called 911 to express concern about alleged threats the man had made.
BOISE, Idaho — Boise Police Chief Ron Winegar said at a media briefing Wednesday that police shot a man after he pointed a firearm at police and “appeared” to fire his weapon.
The shooting investigation is taking place near East Boise Avenue and South Apple Street. That’s near two schools, Timberline High and White Pine Elementary, as well as a shopping center, Stinker Station supermarket, and several other businesses.
Winegar said their suspect was traveling from Oregon to Idaho when his family called 911 to express concern about alleged threats the man had made.
Police found a car they believed belonged to the person in Star and tracked him near Timberline High School. When law enforcement officers stopped his car, Winegar said, the man allegedly jumped out and pointed a firearm at officers and “appeared to fire the gun.”
Winegar said a Boise police officer and an Ada County deputy fired their guns at the man, who was hit but continued to run.
“Officers gave chase,” said Winegar, and were able to take the man into custody. He was transported to a hospital and will be released after treatment at the Ada County Jail.
“Obviously this was a very unstable situation,” said Winegar. “The topic was not expected to stop here.” Winegar said they found a BB gun recovered at the scene “that looked very, very real”, but he can’t say if that was the gun the man allegedly pointed at officers.
In an email to Timberline and White Pine parents and staff, school principals say the shooting occurred at 10:45 a.m. and all students and staff were “kept safe while school activities continued.”
Winegar said the incident happened so quickly that nearby schools never had time to go into lockdown, but school resource officers were prepared with an action plan.
The Ada County Critical Incident Task Force (CITF) investigation will be led by the Meridian Police Department.
