The Walmart in Plainfield IL has failed, that is, has failed to meet financial expectations and will close its doors for good.
This report is not necessarily good news and comes as a shock to this formerly called Walkers’ Grove community.
Yes, the Walmart Supercenter at 12690 South Route 59 in Plainfield is closing its curtain to the public on March 10, 2023, after serving the community for more than a decade.
The store, which opened in 2003 and became a supercenter in 2011, employs about 300 employees who are offered reassignment to nearby Walmart locations or severance pay if they qualify.
A Walmart spokesperson said the decision to close store was based on several factors, including financial performance and long-term plans.
According to Felicia McCranie, Walmart’s current director of corporate affairs, this location “has not performed as well as we had hoped.”

“This was not an easy decision and we deeply care about our employees who will be affected by this closure,” the spokesperson said. “We are grateful for their hard work and dedication to serving our customers.”
The spokesperson added that customers will still be able to shop at the other 7 Walmart supercenters within a 10-mile radius of the Plainfield location. The nearest supercenter is located at 2300 US Highway 34 in Oswego, IL.
The store’s pharmacy will remain open until March 9, 2023, and customers will be able to transfer their prescriptions to another Walmart pharmacy or a pharmacy of their choice.
The photo center, wireless services and other areas of the store will also close on March 10, along with the main store.
Walmart said it will stop serving customers online and through its app for this location, which offers free delivery, pickup and curbside services.
“We appreciate the support of our customers and the Plainfield community over the years,” the spokesperson said. “We look forward to continuing to serve them at our other locations and online.”
