Apple launches Emergency SOS via satellite in more countries

Apple’s Emergency SOS via satellite feature, launched with the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro, is expanding to six more countries.

Apple launches iPhone 14 Emergency SOS via satellite function in six other countries: Austria, Belgium, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal

With the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro, Apple announced a new feature called Emergency SOS via satellite. If you’re in the United States or Canada, your iPhone 14 has the ability to connect directly to a satellite above you and send text messages and your location to emergency services if necessary. Needless to say, this is a life saving feature.

Initially, the feature was limited to the United States and Canada, only recently expanding to the UK, Ireland, Germany, and France. Today, Apple announced that it is expanding the list further by bringing the feature to the following six countries:

  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Italy
  • Luxembourg
  • The Netherlands
  • Portugal

This feature only works as long as you have an iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone Pro, or iPhone 14 Pro Max. Other iPhone models are not supported as they require special hardware to communicate with the orbiting satellite.

If you haven’t used it before, Emergency SOS is super easy to use and iOS will show you how to use it. Just go to Settings > Emergency SOS on your iPhone 14 phone and follow the onscreen instructions. You need a clear line of sight to the sky or the feature just won’t work. The higher the better, as nearby objects such as plantations, houses, buildings, and more can interfere with the operation of this feature.

Apple has a pretty detailed document highlighting how the feature works. We strongly recommend that you read it, especially if your country is now included in the list of countries that support Emergency SOS. You never know when this feature could save you or someone else’s life. There are plenty of real-world examples of how this feature has actually helped people.

This announcement comes along with a new color for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus – yellow. If you were hesitant to buy an iPhone because you knew Apple would announce a new color, now is your time to shine. Rest assured that Apple won’t be announcing any new color at all after this announcement. We’re going straight to the iPhone 15 range of phones in a few months.

Is your country on the list Apple announced today? Let us know!
