March 6 update below. This post was first published on March 3, 2023.
Apple launched its iPhone 14 series last September, but a brand new addition to the range may be coming in a few days. If the rumors are correct, there is a good chance that a new color will be added for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus. And the color? Yellow.
March 6 update. While we wait for the possible announcement of a new iPhone 14, a new leak has appeared. Picked up by Joe Rossignol at MacRumors, it adds fuel to the fire that something is coming, and soon. A Twitter account, May Buhas just claimed to have evidence of new cases for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
According to the leak, there will be two new leather case colors, Deep Violet and Golden Brown, to add to the existing shades.
As you’ll read below, no new iPhone 14 Pro is expected in the near future, but the fact that new cases are being touted is encouraging: Apple likes to release all its spring updates at the same time. Usually it concerns iPhone cases, watch straps and an iPhone in a new color. So the sight of these cases, assuming the leak is real, suggests that new products are coming soon.
And the leaker in question has a mixed but decent track record of predicting the arrival of things in the past, so that’s good.
Apple often has other new color updates for spring, such as delicious new Watch bands. Do they occur at the same time? Maybe a sun yellow watch strap will come with the phone.
Assuming the rumors and leaks are related, we could know more in the coming days. Apple’s spring releases are always worth checking out, and they’re especially appealing to people who, say, wanted to buy a new iPhone in September but didn’t get out of contract on time. An iPhone in a new color has the added benefit of appealing to those who want the very latest, newest option.
While additions to the mid-season iPhone range are nothing new, Apple has kept this iPhone exceptionally tight, so the latest rumors have taken many by surprise.
A report in a Weibo post picked up by Japanese blog Mac Otakara suggested that next week could see the debut of the new yellow iPhones.
So, how likely is it that this rumor is true? Well, it’s hard to know if the Weibo account has any track record, so that’s not a good start.
On the other hand, the timing is quite believable. Last year, on March 8, Apple announced a new green version of the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini, plus alpine green for iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. And MacRumors reports that it was made aware of a product briefing from Apple on Tuesday.
And will there be a yellow Apple iPhone 14 Pro? My guess is no. The Pro phones tend to have more muted colors, and who wants a muted yellow? The joy of yellow is its bright, showy brilliance. And yellow might be a little close to the gold currently in the iPhone 14 Pro color collection.
Yellow, on the other hand, is a staple of the iPhone range. In addition to the iPhone 5c and iPhone XR, there was also a yellow iPhone 11. Oh, and while Apple has never launched a yellow iPhone in spring before, it’s definitely the color of choice for this season, as dark days give way to the joys of more sunshine.
The truth is that there’s not much going on here, although the timing seems very believable.
Apple’s mid-season addition of color has become something of a tradition. Before last year’s green and alpine green, a purple iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini were added in 2021, although a little later, in April. Why was it late? Well, the iPhone 12 series was also announced late, in October 2021, thanks to the Covid disruption.
So the prospect of a new iPhone being announced next Tuesday is intriguing. We may not know much now, but the good news is that we don’t have much longer to wait.
