JAMMU: Secretary of Health and Medical Education (H&ME), Bhupinder Kumar, today chaired a meeting of a committee set up to work on health and nutrition under Viksit Bharat Abhiyan to develop strategies and an action plan for eliminating anemia, micronutrient deficiencies, stunting, and waste about J&K.
The meeting was held with the aim of identifying measurable indicators in each thematic area and developing a strategy/action plan to address identified gaps for improvement of the indicators through a targeted approach with timelines.
During the meeting, the Committee deliberated on various aspects affecting the health and nutrition of the general masses. Detailed discussions were held on the seriousness of the problem and the measures needed to strengthen the existing interventions in coordination with other concerned departments to address the problems.
The Committee also reached a consensus during the meeting that there is a need to review existing implementation strategies of schemes/interventions and gap analyzes of supplies, equipment and tools used for screening and treatment in health care facilities, AWCs, and schools.
In addition, it was also suggested that there is a need for in-depth studies to quantify the values of different indicators related to the theme, to ensure an objective approach in determining the required interventions.
The committee members also agreed during the meeting that food fortification is a scientifically proven, cost-effective, scalable and sustainable global intervention to address the problem of micronutrient deficiencies. They agreed that the introduction and scale-up of food fortification of various food items commonly consumed by the general masses is the need of the hour.
Directions were issued at the meeting to examine various aspects of the implementation of schemes and programs implemented by various departments so that future strategies, goals, interventions and action plans are established for coordinated efforts to achieve the desired level of health and nutrition with defined outcomes. .
The meeting was attended by Food Commissioner J&K, Mission Director NHM J&K, Mission Director, POSHAN J&K, Mission Director, Samagra Shiksha, J&K, Director Health Services Jammu/Kashmir, Controller Drugs & Food Control Organization J&K and other relevant officials.
Head of Govt. Medical College Jammu/Srinagar, Director School Education, Jammu/Kashmir and other relevant officials attended the meeting via video conference.
