After a two-year hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic, Food City’s annual football tournament, Kopa Food City returns to the Phoenix Events Complex this weekend, Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 November.
“For some of these kids, this is the first football tournament they’ve ever played,” said Mike Solis, Food City’s director of operations. “When Food City started this tournament 20 years ago, only 56 football teams competed on eight football fields. This year there are more than 140 teams traveling to this tournament from all parts of Arizona, and from neighboring states. They will play together on twenty football fields.”
Thousands of football fans are expected in western Phoenix this weekend for the tournament, which is celebrating its 20th year. Spectators will gather outside to watch hundreds of footballers, from youth to adults, compete in age group tournaments. In addition to the high-energy football matches, Food City will feature live, family-friendly entertainment from local and nationally recognized musicians, including headliners tropicalisimo Apache and La international Sonora Dinamita. A vendor village area will also be available for families to enjoy interactive booths, games, food sampling, and giveaways.
Additional activities at the football tournament include: famous radio personality El Piolin sotelolocal TV sports anchors and legendary football player Marco Fabian will kick off the opening ceremony on Saturday, November 5 at 11:15 a.m., after which Fabian will sign autographs until 2:00 p.m.; and Food City will award prizes to the winning football teams in each age group on Sunday, November 6 at 4 p.m.
To celebrate the 20th anniversary Kopa Food City football tournament, from November 5 through Thanksgiving, November 24, will surprise Food City shoppers by randomly giving away prizes on the spot in its stores. Prizes include barbecue grills, coolers, camping chairs, and Food City gift cards.
In addition, Food City shoppers who spend at least $20 in one transaction between Nov. 5 and 24 have a chance to win $20,000 in cash from Food City. Those who make a qualifying purchase during this time will receive a printout from the registry with a unique sweepstakes code. They can enter their unique sweepstakes code by either scanning the QR code on the checkout printout or by visiting FoodCitySweepstakes.com. There is no limit to the number of sweepstakes code entries an individual can submit. Food City will randomly select six finalists and invite them to appear at a designated Food City supermarket on November 26, when it will hold a cash draw for the six finalists. Five runners-up will each receive $1,000 in cash and one grand prize winner will receive $20,000 in cash.
As part of planning and hosting the annual Kopa Food City football tournament has distributed the supermarket chain more than 35,000 football uniforms, donated more than 35,000 footballs and awarded more than 10,000 medals and 500 trophies to the best performing football players and teams.
