DeSanti’s proud Florida is ‘where wakes up to die’, Crist accuses him of focusing on 2024 presidential run

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has thrown overboard the gauntlet of the cultural war and declared Florida the place where “awake dies,” but his opponent accused him of using the governor’s office as a launch pad for a 2024 presidential bid. .

“I think Floridians want someone who is behind them and not focusing on running for the presidency in 2024, as we know the DeSantis administration is trying to do,” Charlie Crist, the Democratic nominee for governor of Florida, told Fox News on Saturday’s ” Cavuto Live.”

DeSantis has instead focused his campaign on the bills he passed this year to help fight “wake up,” which he claimed posed a threat to institutions in the country.

“What you see with being awake drives people to tear down statues of Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson — in an effort to rewrite our history,” DeSantis said at a rally in Pensacola, Florida, earlier this week. “You’re awake and driving people to convince us that men can get pregnant.”

DeSantis has focused on a number of socially driven initiatives in his state in the run-up to the midterms.

Last week, the Florida Board of Medicine and the State Board of Osteopathic Medicine voted to go ahead with a plan that will prevent anyone under the age of 18 from having sex reassignment surgery or taking hormones.

And earlier this year, DeSantis signed the parental rights law in education, which critics have labeled the “Don’t Say Gay” law. It prohibits teachers from providing classroom instruction about “sexual orientation” or “gender identity” in kindergarten through third grade.

The bill faces another legal challenge after plaintiffs filed a revised challenge this week alleging the law violated key precedents and the First Amendment.

Florida has also passed a 15-week abortion ban, although it is also being challenged legally after a state judge moved to try to block the law.

Crist accused DeSantis of pushing “partisan politics” from a “wannabe dictator,” according to KFOX 14. He accused DeSantis of putting “partisan politics above the needs of our schoolchildren” and making schools part of a “MAGA culture war agenda” .

DeSantis argued that “waking up” “will destroy this country” and insisted that Florida “must keep pushing back to get it out”.

“We’re going to stand up for the truth, we’re going to stand up for the core principles that made this country great. And our state is the state where Wake is going to die,” DeSantis said at his meeting.
