Restaurant News: Soulfood in Shaw, Pok Bowls in Gaithersburg, Local Pizza at Reagan National

Doro Soul Food, a takeout and delivery restaurant focused on soul food, opens November 17 in the Shaw neighborhood of DC at 1819 7th St. NW.

Doro Soul Food comes from chef Elias Taddessee, the Ethiopian-born owner of burger and milkshake bar Mélange in DC’s Mount Vernon neighborhood. The menu blends American soul food with Ethiopian flavors, featuring bone-fried and charcoal-grilled chicken and chicken sandwiches with spice levels from mild to very hot. Cornbread, kale, and some spiced mac n’ cheese are among the sides.

Taddessee opened Mélange two years ago. He was a finalist this year for the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington’s Rising Culinary Star Award and was named Eater DC’s Chef of the Year in 2021.

Another award-winning DC restaurant is also expanding: Timber Pizza Co., which earned the Michelin Bib Gourmand award from 2018 to 2022 and was named Bon Appetit Pizzeria of the Year in 2017, has opened an outpost at Reagan National Airport.

The Timber Pizza is located in the newly opened Concourse E shuttle service at Gate E51 and is open daily for lunch, dinner and late evenings, and for breakfast with breakfast sandwiches.

“Washington, DC has been embracing Aloha Poke Co. since 2018 and I am excited to expand into the Maryland suburbs,” said Chris Birkinshaw, CEO of Aloha Pokē Co. “Given Mary Grace’s passion and business experience, along with growing consumer trends towards clean eating and an excellent market opportunity, this really ticks all the boxes. We can’t wait for the people of Gaithersburg to try our signature Crunch Bowl.”

The location in Gaithersburg has not yet been selected. The franchisee is considering multiple locations. It is expected to open in early 2023.

The menu features sustainably sourced ingredients, rod-caught ahi tuna and Patagonian salmon.

The chain was founded in 2016 in Chicago and has grown to 20 locations. The Dupont Circle location opened in 2018.
