Canadian actor Ryan Grantham, 23, was sentenced Wednesday in the British Columbia Supreme Court, according to CTV. He had pleaded guilty to first degree murder for killing his mother, 64, Barbara Waiteon March 31, 2020, the report said.

Grantham has admitted to firing the fatal shot that killed his mother while she was playing the piano, CTV said. Grantham reportedly lit candles, hung rosaries over the piano, and prayed before leaving their home in Squamish, British Columbia, about an hour north of Vancouver.

CTV reported that Grantham did not want his mother to see what he considered to be his shortcomings.

At the time of Waite’s death, Grantham had apparently intended to assassinate Prime Minister Trudeau. He had a printed map with directions to Rideau Cottage, the prime minister’s residence in Ottawa, about 2,700 miles east of Vancouver. Grantham didn’t make it, though: When he reached the town of Hope, nearly 100 miles east of Vancouver, he turned around and drove to Vancouver police headquarters, where he surrendered to authorities.

Grantham had also apparently considered massacres at Simon Fraser University and the Lions Gate Bridge in Vancouver.

After 14 years, he will be eligible for parole. CTV reported that Justice Kathleen Kero encouraged Grantham to attend classes and counseling while incarcerated.

“I won’t overdo it, this will be difficult,” she reportedly said. “As you move forward, stay on your path of treatment, stay true to the promise you told me (at the hearing) about improving yourself.”

CTV reported that Grantham had apologized for killing his mother during his June hearing.

“My mother was a caring, compassionate and loving person,” he reportedly said. “She didn’t do anything to deserve what I did to her.”

“Given something so terrible, it seems almost pointless to say sorry,” he also said, according to CTV, as emotional relatives sat in the front row of the courtroom gallery. “But from every fiber of my being I’m sorry.”

According to the report, a forensic psychologist said Grantham’s mental state was “far from normal” at the time, characterizing it as unstable, chaotic, ambivalent and fragile. One of his lawyers reportedly claimed that major depressive disorder, cannabis use and isolation all contributed to his decision to kill his mother.

Grantham had dozens of film and TV credits dating back to 2007, including appearances in supernatural, iZombieand The life of a loser, according to IMBD. His most recent role was in Riverdalewhich is based on the Archie comics. According to a CTV recap, Grantham played a teenager who took his father’s truck without permission and killed Archie’s father, Fred.

Fred was played by actor Luke Perrywho died of a stroke in 2019.
