Cubs’ Marcus Stroman about the first children’s book: ‘If I get an idea… I immediately start it’

PITTSBURGH — Cubs right-handed Marcus Stroman released the cover of his first book on Twitter on Friday, loosely based on his childhood and written for 8 to 12 year olds.

Stroman’s interests outside of baseball are wide ranging, from podcasting to wine. He has started two clothing brands, the second of which, SHUGO, will be released in November. This three-part book series, published by Simon & Schuster, is his latest venture.

“If I get an idea and I want to do something, I do it,” Stroman told the Sun-Times. ”I’m not waiting. I started it right away. I have a great team of people around me who help make all my ideas come true. . . . I’ve been very involved, which was great. So I’m excited to see the reaction once it’s out.”

The first book in the series, entitled ”The Grip” is already available for pre-order and will go on sale on January 31, 2023.

“It’s loosely based on my upbringing as a kid,” Stroman said. “Young minority boy on the way, divorced parents, playing sports, going to school and doing everything that young children have to deal with – from bullies to juggling schoolwork and homework to living with your mother, then going to your father’s house in a divorced So I’m excited because it really focuses on mental adversity and mental health as well.”

When asked to imagine his son, kaiOne day, when he picked up the book to read, Stroman took a moment to think about what he would like him to get out of it.

“To always be himself, to passionately pursue his dreams, to never let anyone get in the way of his dreams,” Stroman said. ”I often feel in this world, especially with social media, there are so many people working against you. Or there are so many ways you can give in to people and not allow yourself to really pursue what you want to do in life. So I think it’s extremely important to keep a small group of people who love you and are going to support you.”

Stroman said the next two books in the series will also be semi-autobiographical. But while he has a few ideas, their specific topic has yet to be determined.

A few months before ”The Grip” comes out, Stroman has planned another launch party. Pre-orders for SHUGO ZERO cleats and sneakers, in three color combinations, have gone live this week. Stroman said he is targeting the first or second week of November for the launch party.
