Man charged with neglect after 2 children are found in Volusia Walmart parking lot

DELTONA, Fla. – A Deltona man was arrested Wednesday charged with child neglect after two toddlers were found in a Walmart parking lot in nothing but diapers.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said witnesses saw the two children running that night in the parking lot of the Walmart on Howland Boulevard in Deltona. A witness said the unattended children were nearly hit by a car.

According to an incident report, Walmart employees dressed and nursed the children until officers arrived. They appeared unharmed, officers said.

Officers found a vehicle still driving in the parking lot, and a man – identified as Dejoune Killingbeck, 35 – unconscious behind the wheel. The officers were able to wake Killingbeck, who they said told him to babysit the children for their mother, who entered the store.

After Killingbeck was cleared by Volusia medics, officers said he was taken to a patrol car where he attempted to dispose of a cut straw. Deputies said they had recovered it and a field test showed residue on the straw suspected of having positive reactions to oxycodone and fentanyl.

Deputies said the children’s mother had told them she did not know Killingbeck was drunk and that he had agreed to babysit the children, who were asleep at the time.

Killingbeck is charged with tampering with evidence, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving with a suspended license and two counts of child neglect. He was booked in the Volusia County Jail and is being held there on a $16,000 bond.
