Walmart Makes It Easier to Buy Qualifying SNAP Items Online

Walmart is streamlining its online shopping experience to better suit customers seeking SNAP-eligible items, according to a company blog post Tuesday with an overview of recent site improvements.

In’s “Grocery” department tab, shoppers can now select a filtered section under “Featured Shops” that lists only SNAP-eligible items. From there, customers can further refine their search by price, brand, department, nutritional needs, rating, and more.

Even if shoppers don’t go to the curated list, every item that can be purchased with an EBT or SNAP debit card has a clearly marked blue-and-white decal that reads “EBT,” making it easily identifiable.

“Regardless of how our customers pay for their food, we want them to enjoy convenient shopping options that fit their schedule. And we want to make the experience for them as seamless as possible,” the announcement said.

This advancement on Walmart’s site comes just a few months after the USDA released a statement: announcing efforts to increase the number and diversity of retailers’ offerings Buy SNAP online. In July, when the announcement was made, the USDA stated it was seeking applications for a $5 million grant to make this a reality.

Later that same month, Albertsons announced the launch of SNAP online purchasing capabilities in five of its banners.

The continued expansion of SNAP online purchases comes as retailers strive to generate a more inclusive and accessible shopping experience for consumers and bring in more of their spend.
