TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – The building that once housed the Mott Branch Library on Dorr St. is vacant. It is opposite the new Mott Library and in a neighborhood that many Toledo city councilors agree needs some development.
“I really believe the neighborhood needs something there,” said Vanice Williams, Toledo City Council, District 4. Williams says she’s supporting a project to revive this site. She did, however, express her frustrations during a city council meeting in May.
Compassion Health Toledo plans to build a second clinic here. The group’s existing clinic is on Broadway near South in the old South Branch Library. Compassion Health bought the city’s former Mott Branch Library for one dollar.
After Williams and other councilors signed the deal, they said they learned that Sandy Spang, the city’s business services commissioner, was on Compassion Health’s board in 2019 and eventually stepped down. They, they said, changed their mind about the deal.
Today was about the change of destination.
“This had nothing to do with anything other than the zoning change. Yes, I can say that I was not happy with the process, and I will continue to say that. I will keep saying, ‘Was it fair?’ I don’t think so,” Williams said.
For now, the plan calls for a half-million dollar renovation of the facility, which is due to open in 2023.
